Digby the Guest Writer

Dear Mommy and Daddy,

I've been having a really fun time at camp and I don't want you to worry about me. Everyone is taking great care of me.

There is a little boy here - they call him Ian - who is really concerned that I am eating enough. As soon as I got here yesterday, he filled up my bowl.

And then for lunch, he brought my food right to my room.

He even fed me by hand.

At breakfast this morning, he fed me with a spoon.

The little boy even follows me around with my food bowl just in case I get hungry again.

The little boy has this great doggie toy that looks just like me. He named it, "Ian's Digby" and he calls me "Mommy's Digby." Although I think it's a perfect doggie toy, the boy seems to think it's his. He keeps saying, "No, Digby, no. Don't eat it." I keep trying...

And trying...

Every once in a while, I get a mouthful.

But then that clever boy outsmarts me.

Even though he won't let me play with "Ian's Digby," the little boy gives me lots of hugs. I know you were worried, Mommy, that I would bite the little boy, but I'm really nice to him. I don't even jump or nip at him.

I give him kisses too.

I don't understand why he wipes them right off.

When I am not playing with the little boy, there is a older dog here that loves playing with me. We are crazy dogs in the backyard and have a ton of fun playing with each other. By the way, I'm a really good boy and come right away when my name gets called.

So that other dog - she must be really old. I think she's already 18 dog years old. We run around for a long time and then she gets tired! I don't get it. I just want to keep running and running. Yesterday we went for a long walk with the little boy after playing in the backyard. I was running ahead and the old dog was dragging behind.

Well, I guess I get a little tired too.

My favorite place to hang out is on that other dog's bed. It's super comfy.

Well, Mommy and Daddy, I hope you are having fun on your vacation. The little boy wants me to come live here forever, but I'll bet you want me to come home.

I miss you!

Love,
Digby

Zoo Again

Ian and I had a fun Mommy / Son morning today and headed to the zoo. Tony left early this morning for another work trip, so we sent him a little video to see when he got off the plane.

Little man also did some waving to Daddy.

Today was a freakishly warm February day, so it was such a great day to be out. Ian was most interested in the flamingos and scared of the crazy bird again. He wouldn't even let me walk over to its window. The "guy" he brought with him was Manchas (Spanish for Spots).

January 365

January 31, 2012

Grandpa Gary sent Ian a present - a construction book. He was very excited to open his present and was even more excited when the inside of the book had a picture of Grandpa Gary.

"Grandpa Gary has a broken finger" was what he said when he saw the picture.

After we finished reading the book (for the first time) Ian said, "Mommy, this is a very neat present."

Ian's spanish is really taking off this month. He doesn't like to speak spanish with us, but does very freely with Rossita. She only speaks spanish to him and he understands everything. Increasingly he is responding to her too. Yesterday he asked, "Dónde está mamá?" while I was at work. Awww...

Ian and I were playing with two airplanes that he and Grandpa Gary spent a long time with during their visit in December. I said, "Ian, you played with these planes a lot with Grandpa Gary." Ian's response, "Grandpa Gary has a broken finger." That blew my mind for a couple of reasons. One, that he knew and recognized Grandpa Gary by name (no picture) and that he associated him with his "broken finger." (Dad has a stub finger that Ian latched onto and called it Grandpa Gary's broken finger.)

I feel like an idiot. We had been having bath trouble for some time. It was something that neither Ian nor I enjoyed and the struggle mostly revolved around rinsing the shampoo from his hair. He screamed every time I dumped water over his head. I tried all sorts of tactics: "Ian, it's a waterfall!" "It's raining." "We'll go really fast." Nothing worked and he hated it. As soon as the water part was over, he was fine again, so I just took to dumping water really quickly over his head and dealt with the screaming.

This was a bit of a "well, duh" moment. One day I tried the "Ian, look up to the ceiling" tactic. He did. It works. Beautifully! And now bath time is fun again! He looks up to the ceiling, squints like mad, and keeps his face dry. No screaming. Just happy little guy.

Ian was talking in his sleep. I wonder what's going on in his little head.... "Mommy, Maddie is flying the kite."

He's absolutely going to be an extreme sports kind of guy. There's no just taking it easy on the flat surface of the road. He's all about heading off road to go over sticks and rocks.

Grandpa Gary the Artist will be proud. Ian knows very well that red and yellow make orange. If we could apply all the different colors to food, he really would catch on quickly.

The Pats game. What a game. And Ian thought so too. I was at a baby shower, but got home for the last half of the 4th quarter. Ian sat on my lap and we watched the rest of the game. He loved it!

Ian: Mommy, the man crashed.
Me: That's called a tackle. We want the man with the ball to get tackled.
Ian: Mommy, the man kicked the ball.
Me: And he missed! That makes us very happy!
Ian: Mommy, we are very happy.
Me: Yes, Ian. We are.

Grammi T gave Ian these great Montessori letters (although Ian calls them numbers). I can't wait to get some great use out of them!

January 19, 2012

Little man has been going through a really incredible stage lately. Not that he hasn't been fun all along, but this is just amazing. He and I had a special afternoon together at the aquarium. We had real conversations about the different fish and critters in the tanks.

After the aquarium, we walked over to Legal Seafoods (I know - a little strange eating seafood after seeing all the fish). It was a great experience - I was so impressed by the staff. They really catered to the little guy and seated us next to a tank so we could watch fish while waiting for our food. Ian was chatty chatty so we just hung out talking and then when the food came, he ate like a champ. He tried all sorts of food that was new to him - tuna steak, scallops, and some other white fish. Oh and broccoli - he couldn't get enough.

We topped off the night with a ride on the big purple train. We had such a fun time!

"Ian's diaper is super duper wet" is what he said this morning when I grabbed him from his crib.

January 17, 2012

"On your marks. Get set. Go!"

Playing in the playground, Ian kept drawing starting lines so we could race. We lined up, he called the race, and we took off. I never knew where we were running to, but he'd show me. I guess that means that he won every time too.

Ian loves his flamingos!

January 15, 2012

Ian got his first fat lip while playing with Maddie. I came home from work to see a child that looked completely different than my little man. I know it's only his lip, but what a difference it made in his face. The picture doesn't do it justice.

Frozen blueberries calmed it down a day later.

Monsters. Ian is really into monsters right now. He finds them under cabinets, the stairs, the dishwasher... He holds them out and shows me his monsters, who are all happy by the way. Every once in a while he has a crow (best friends with the monster) or a piggie.

January 10, 2012

Today was a big, umm... milestone? Ian had just woken up and was chatting away in his crib, so I went down to take Maddie out before going into his room. As I was coming back upstairs, I heard a loud "clunk" and immediate crying... Yes, little man finally climbed out of the crib, something he could have done long ago but never tried.

We really debated whether to put the toddler bed together rather than the crib, but finally decided that Ian learns lessons really well. We talked about how we don't want to climb out and fall down again.

As much as I don't want him to fall out again, I do think he'll take well to the lesson. I also think he'll sleep better when he still has the crib to confine him away from his trains and LEGOs. Time will tell...

It's kind of hard to see in this picture, but notice Ian's rosy cheeks. As he gets tired, the cheeks get more red. It's a little warning light we have for the little man.

Thank you Auntie Kate and Uncle Paul for the super cool head lamp!!

Ian hasn't lost his love for white rice since Thailand. The kid couldn't get enough.

New Game: "Where is it?"
Ian is so clever and hides something (monster truck, Lightening McQueen, Thomas) behind his back and says, "Where is it?" Then we guess which hand the toy is in. My favorite is when he switches hands in front of himself and then "hides" it again.

First Ice Skating

Our neighbors built an ice skating rink in their backyard this winter, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) the warm winter has given them a pool instead. This weekend was freezing cold, so the rink froze enough for the neighborhood kids to enjoy.

Here Ian is - ready for his first ice skating adventure.

We walked around the edge a few times and he really liked slipping around. Fun time was over when one of the grown ups stepped on the ice and it cracked. I'm guessing we'll get another crack at it as it's supposed to be 7 degrees tonight.
